Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
1. EXAMINES and reviews new patent applications, its specifications, claims, designs and other details to see if it meets requirements for approval.
2. CONDUCTS extensive research to ensure that patent is novel or not, that it complies with the country’s patent legal requirements, including its eligibility, description specification, and if the claim is clearly defining what the applicant is trying to protect.
3. REVIEWS and examines new patent applications by ensuring that all relevant authentic documents are stamped and signed etc. with relevant information and are submitted to immediate supervisor.
4. PERFORMS extensive research to ensure that no existing patent will be compromised, performs a search for any prior patents that may be similar and compares the new application to any previous claims, in order to safeguard the interest of existing patent holders.
5. ASSESSES whether an application for a patent meets legal requirements and makes recommendation and submits these to immediate supervisor.
6. INFORMS patent applicant and patent owner or legal representatives about the registration process and procedures by providing details as to the documents, signatures, fees and the similar.
7. ANSWERS telephone calls and emails as to the status of the applicant’s application and if any requirement is pending in the part of the applicant and advises as to the way forward.
8. AIDS members of the public and other stakeholder who have queries on patent related matters, refers clients to appropriate senior personnel when necessary.
9. COMMUNICATES to applicant or their legal representative any changes in legislation or departmental procedures in regard to patent application, in order to promote voluntary compliance.
10. UDPATES and maintains on a continuous basis, the National Patent Register, in order to keep information relevant and updated.
11. FILES both hardcopy and digital patent applications with relevant attachments, using appropriate filing sequence in a timely manner; opens new files and closes files as necessary - for safeguard and quick retrieval - in accordance with government procedures and regulations.
